Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How far do you travel?
A: I am based in Troy, NY and travel throughout most of the Capital District. For an extra charge, I can travel beyond the Capital District.
Q: Is there a minimum number of guests or hours that you require to book an event?
A: All events are special and no event is too small. Show moreI have worked events for as little as 8 people. The extra time allows for a great opportunity for people to get another picture done with a friend or small group. I do require a minimum booking of 1 hour, after which I will book in 30-minute or 60-minute increments. Unless I have another party booked that day, I am flexible and can stay longer. Hide
Q: How many pictures can you draw in an hour?
A: I average about 40 caricatures in an hour. Since the caricatures are profile from the neck up, the sketch develops quickly and only takes about a minute per person. Show moreI have been known to draw even more people per hour than I quote, but it also depends on how quickly people get in and out of my chair, their age, if they are chatty, etc. Because I draw the caricature so fast, a crowd usually gathers behind me to watch the caricature take shape. So, not only do your guests get to take a picture home with them, but I provide fun entertainment for all of the guests. Hide
Q: What kind of paper do you use?
A: I draw on heavy-bond, bright-white, 8.5" x 11" paper. A clear plastic bag is provided with each caricature to protect it on its trip home. Show moreBecause I use a black marker, you are permitted to make photocopies of the picture. I'm happy to use any other paper that you provide, including letterhead. For a nominal charge, I can design special paper that commemorates your special event. Hide
Q: What kind of space do you need to set up?
A: I bring an easel and a lightstand with me to all events. All I need from you are two chairs, an electrical outlet close by, and an area where your guests can see me draw. Show moreIf the event is outdoors, I'd prefer a somewhat shaded area so that my subjects aren't looking directly into the sun. If possible, please try not to seat me next to speakers, as it makes it difficult to converse with your guests. Hide
Q:How many people can you fit on one paper? Do they all have to sit there at once?
A: I can fit many faces on one page, but the more there are, the smaller the faces will be. Generally, 2-4 people on one page is best. Show more However, I've done as many as fifteen on one page with small faces. They don't all have to sit at once, but I do like to see them all standing together to start, so that I can get a sense of the space that's needed on the paper. Hide
Q: Do guests have to sit absolutely still?
A: No, I generally draw from babies to children and antsy adults. Since it's such a quick sketch, it's usually not an issue.
Q: How many hours can you draw? Do you take breaks?
A: I do have a one hour minimum for events. However, I can draw for just about any amount of time required. Show moreI've done events where I've worked for up to twelve hours. Most events range between two and five hours. My contract states that I'm allowed no more than one 15 minute break per hour; however, I usually only take breaks as needed and rarely for more than 5 minutes per hour. My priority is to draw as many of your guests as possible in the time allotted. Hide
Q: How do you determine who gets their caricatures next?
A: In order to determine who goes next, I have guests stand in line. Show moreThe lines tend to form naturally in a way that guests can watch other people's caricatures being created. Watching other people's caricatures being drawn is half the fun. Hide
Q: I'd like to book you for my event. What do I do now?
A: Once you've emailed or called me for availability and rates, I send a simple contract that lists the particulars of your event--client name, contact info, date, time, event location, and anything you'd like me to keep in mind (such as whether the event is a surprise, if there is a theme, any special directions, etc.). Show moreI require a nonrefundable 20% deposit to hold your date for you and once I receive it with the contract, then I consider the event BOOKED. (If some unforseen circumstance occurs and I cannot attend your event, I will refund your deposit in full.) Then, I join you at your event and the fun begins! Hide
